When we are tossed around by our daily urgencies, we sometimes forget to take care of ourselves. This could distract us from having a clear perspective or solid decision-making skills.
Imagine when you are sleep deprived and incredibly stressed. You might be more prone to snap at your friends, coworkers, and family members. In fact, most of us have probably been in that position before. Or instead of being irritable, you are drowsy and can’t focus. Suddenly your work becomes lower quality and your brain slips into autopilot to save on energy until you can get to bed. While you’re unfocused, your unconscious bias can take over.
After recognizing that you aren’t feeling yourself, step away from your office. Either go for a walk to get some fresh air and be away from your computer, take a 15-minute nap to rejuvenate, or meditate for 5 minutes. Walking away from stressful or tiresome situations for a short amount of time will allow your brain to take a much-needed break. In fact, if a short break doesn’t help, it might be a good idea to postpone big decisions until you’ve sharpened the saw.
