We have all been in situations where someone says something that doesn’t make sense. A lot of the time, we play along even if we don’t understand. This is because we don’t want to feel ignorant or stupid for asking something that everyone already knows. This way of life was taught to us by peer pressure and rejections, but it is no way to live.
Asking questions is a great way to clarify confusing situations. If there are changes happening to the company or if a coworker does something that you don’t understand, don’t be afraid to ask why.
If someone makes an off-hand comment, it is important for you to ask “Can I ask what you mean by that?” Or “Is there a reason you feel that way?” Make people own their words and explain their position. You might discover that they misspoke or maybe you hurt their feelings earlier and they still had unresolved feelings.
Being curious clarifies situations and helps you to understand what needs to be done or what is happening.
